2 Suspects Detained After a Kidnapped Woman is Rescued

Western Cape law enforcement officials are receiving praise for freeing a hostage and apprehending two criminals.

The two suspects, a lady, 22, and a male, 29, are in custody. Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the spokesperson for the Western Cape police, stated that the arrest and rescue were made possible by the cooperation of several specialized units within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Pojie stated that following a home invasion on January 26 and a kidnapping on February 5 in Strand, the interdisciplinary team investigated leads. During this operation, firearms and ammunition were also taken into custody.

As a result of additional investigation into a kidnapping that occurred on February 5, 2024, which is directly related to the house robbery in Strand on January 26, 2024, a multidisciplinary Anti-Kidnapping Investigation task team, aided by the POCC Combat Unit, Strand detectives, provincial hostage negotiations, Crime Intelligence, and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as Hawks), began a take-down operation on Thursday, February 22.

“On Thursday, the team’s inquiry took them to a location in Khayelitsha’s Site B off Mew Way. There, they conducted a search and discovered two guns and two hundred rounds of ammunition in various calibres. Following the discovery, members took the two tortoises that were being held without a permit, the rifles, and ammo, and arrested a 29-year-old suspect. Also, the members discovered tiny amounts of drugs, which they confiscated, according to Pojie.

The kidnapped 25-year-old woman was discovered by the members after they went to another nearby house. While they were saving her, the members also took a 22-year-old female suspect into custody.

According to Pojie, the defendants are accused of illegally possessing weapons and ammunition, illegally possessing drugs, illegally possessing presumed stolen property, and illegally holding wild animals in custody.

After being charged, the accused are anticipated to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.
