50 Shacks in the Joe Slovo Informal Settlement are Destroyed by Fire

In the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa on the Cape Flats, fifty shacks were destroyed by fire last night, leaving about 200 people without a place to live.

Five firefighting vehicles and fire department personnel from the City of Cape Town have been sent to the area.

To help the victims, representatives of the humanitarian group Gift of the Givers are also present.

“Gift of the Givers team members are currently on site at the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa,” said spokeswoman Ali Sablay. For these impacted families, Easter weekend is dismal because they were unable to salvage any possessions, particularly when classes resume next week. The City of Cape Town fire service deserves praise for controlling the fire, and they are presently working to put out any flare-ups by mopping up. Members of the Gift of the Givers team will be on hand Sunday morning to provide humanitarian aid to the impacted families.
