Hong Kong national dies after scuba dive in Gqeberha

After an unsuccessful attempt to resuscitate a Hong Kong tourist, he emerged from a scuba dive on Sunday unconscious.

The Gqeberha duty crew of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called into action at 10:45 on Sunday in response to reports of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) operations taking place on a dive charter boat.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port of Port Elizabeth Port Control provided the first reports.

According to a statement from the NSRI, CPR was being given to an adult male on a dive charter boat that was traveling in the direction of the Port of Port Elizabeth.

The statement stated that the dive charter boat was in the area of the outer Bell Buoy at the time.

“Rescue 6 Alpha, the NSRI Gqeberha rescue craft, which had already been launched after a routine stand-by at the local Iron Man competition, was already on the water at our NSRI rescue station.”

Following the distress call, the Eastern Cape Government Health EMS and Relay ambulance services were also notified and activated.

The crew of the dive charter boat was “conducting CPR on a Chinese man, a tourist,” according to NSRI rescue officers who arrived on the site, which was half a nautical mile from the port entrance.

The 50-year-old guy appeared to have been unconscious when he surfaced from a dive and was found aboard the dive charter boat, according to the NSRI.

The Chinese Consulate in Cape Town verified on Monday that the dead was a man from Hong Kong, according to The Standard and South China Morning Post.

Additional Resuscitating Actions

After that, the man was taken to an NSRI rescue craft, where CPR was administered while traveling to the Gqeberha rescue station.

The station’s paramedics kept performing advanced life support CPR. Despite these attempts at resuscitation, the guy was pronounced dead since he could not be revived.

An inquest docket has been opened, and the SA Police Services were on the scene. The Government Health Forensic Pathology Services has been tasked with caring for the deceased’s body.

The NSRI concluded, “Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man.”

NSRI Verifies Fisherman’s Drowning Near Cape Point

An another boating tragedy occurred over the weekend, and the NSRI reported on Sunday that a man had perished close to Cape Point.

The incident happened in Brightwaters on the Atlantic side of Cape Point on Saturday morning, according to the NSRI.

The alarm was set off by two other male passengers on the overturned boat, and multiple emergency services teams were notified.

After their boat overturned in the surf zone due to heavy fog, both people made it to the land. Their skipper was nowhere to be seen.

According to the NSRI statement, “the casualty boat was found beached upon arrival, and an extensive sea and shoreline search commenced for the missing 39-year-old skipper.”

“The man’s body was found during the search at Brightwaters, roughly 30 to 50 meters offshore, and was recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft.”

“Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead.”
