A Report on the Fire at Table Mountain National Park

Update regarding Table Mountain fires

Overnight flare-ups have been reported behind Newlands, Fernwood Park, and on the slopes of Kirstenbosch, with extensive burning observed in steep and challenging terrain on the slopes of Kirstenbosch. These flare-ups have been moving towards Orangekloof, Maclear’s Beacon, and the Back Table of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) due to changes in wind patterns.

All hiking paths between Newlands and Constantia Nek, including those that originate from the area between Camps Bay and Hout Bay, are CLOSED due to safety concerns. Additionally, all trails that go to Maclear’s Beacon and the Back Table of TMNP are closed.

We strongly advise users not to approach these locations as the safety of the locals, hikers, and firefighters continues to be our top priority.

SANParks is pleading with the public to observe the path closures so as to prevent any danger to individuals or impediment to firefighting operations.

Forty firefighters from NCC Environmental Services and Working on Fire are currently actively involved in various regions along the fireline at SANParks. However, the severity of the fire is unpredictable due to cloud cover and wind fluctuations, making control and prediction challenging.

The majority of the impacted areas are inaccessible, and the low visibility makes it impossible for ground and airborne troops to carry out active fire suppression and water-bombing operations.

Table Mountain National Park is grateful to the public and other organizations who have sponsored drinks, hot meals, energy bars, and other items for our firemen.

SANParks is requesting that people continue to assist them by donating 500-liter water bottles, energy drinks, energy bars, warm meals, and sealed lunch box snacks to firefighters. These items can be left off at the Newlands Fire Base.

We’ll keep you informed as things progress. We appreciate the community’s cooperation at this difficult time.
