A Student Drowned in the Centurion While Attempting to Save a Fellow Student.

More information about the Centurion drowning incident, in which two students from Daveyton Skills School perished during a camp for discipline, has surfaced.

The second learner allegedly tried to save the first learner after he ran off and dove into the river. Sadly, this led to the drowning of both students.

The two students, ages 13 and 16, attended a disciplinary camp hosted by Rising Stars Generation, a non-governmental organization, in Pretoria, according to the Gauteng Department of Education. The learners were expected to return on Monday, April 15, after the program ended on Friday, April 12.

A representative for Gauteng Education, Steve Mabona, claimed that after Monday afternoon’s activities were over, there is a report that one of the students bolted toward a local river near the campsite gate. An more student trailed behind, trying to entice him to return.

Additionally, it is said that the second learner attempted to save the runaway learner by jumping into the river. But regrettably, as a result, both students drowned,” he said.

Mabona stated that the department would send a psycho-social support unit to the school in order to offer the appropriate counseling and trauma support.

The deaths of two students upset Matome Chiloane, the MEC for Education for Gauteng.

“The tragic deaths of our students during a school outing sadden us much. The Daveyton Skills School community and their respective families have our deepest condolences, on behalf of the department,” Chiloane added.
