An Ex-Winger with the Chiefs Describes How Cavin Johnson Battled for his Career

Ex-Chiefs winger reveals how Cavin Johnson fought for his career

Thuso Phala, a former winger for Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United, talked about how Cavin Johnson helped him get back on track at Platinum Stars. After struggling to be consistent and get playing time at Amakhosi, Phala departed the team in 2009 to play for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Before joining Platinum Stars, where he rose to fame at the club, he was only there for a year.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player claimed in an interview with Trap and Pass Featurin that Cavin Johnson was essential to his career revival in 2012, following his fall from favor with the head coach.

In the interview, he claimed that the club had rejected his request to relocate abroad.

First of all, as I’ve already stated, I don’t regret not traveling abroad, Phala continued.

“However, this is how things work; we were in November and my contract with Platinum Stars was about to expire in June. Cavin Johnson joined the squad as a coach that same month. The senior members of the team give him orders not to play me.

You can determine who was in authority at that time by doing the math.

Since his contract was about to expire, he was instructed not to play Thuso. The former Chiefs winger disclosed that Cavin Johnson chose to field the top player from Soweto despite the opposition. He stated that the team administration intended to bench him because they believed he was aging.

Phala, the Ex-Chiefs Winger Says Cavin Johnson is Like a Father to Him

“Platinum Stars were fighting for relegation, which was fortunate for me. Johnson approached me and told me, “I’m going to play you, even though the office is against you.” Please don’t let me down when I do. I consider him to be a father figure now because of this, Phala remarked.

He stated Johnson informed the management that he must do well in order to prevent relegation. Phala said that his inclusion on the 2023 Bafana Bafana Afcon team was mostly due to his assistance in keeping Platinum Stars from being demoted.
