Assessments Are Being Conducted to Determine the Cause of the Johannesburg Tunnel Fire.

On Thursday morning, City Power is anticipated to evaluate the extent of the damage done to the electrical infrastructure as a result of the fire.

This comes after the underground fire that occurred on Wednesday near the Johannesburg CBD along the M1.

Early on Wednesday morning, there was news of the fire.

A good portion of the road was shrouded in a cloud of dark smoke.

Based on preliminary investigations, it was discovered that suspected cable theft and vandalism caused a cable linking the Fordsburg substation to the Braamfontein substation to catch fire.

This came after the utilities team found items that are typically employed in theft and vandalism, like hacksaws, cutters, and screwdrivers. A cellphone was also found at the scene of the fire.

The regions of Braamfontein, Newtown, and Parktown are still without energy, according to Isaac Mangena, a spokesman for City Power.

“We anticipate beginning work on Thursday in the middle of the morning. The tasks will involve removing the debris and determining the extent of the damaged electrical infrastructure, which will in turn dictate the plans for repairs and restoration as well as the ETR.

“Meanwhile, our technicians are also working on alternatives to see if some of the areas can not be back-fed through our Fort and Bree substations nearby.”
