At Least 11 Dead and Hundreds of Displaced by Madagascar’s Cyclone Gamane

At least 11 people were murdered and many more were displaced by a tropical cyclone that raced across the island of Madagascar this week, according to the emergency management office of that nation.

The National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) stated in a report late on Thursday that more than 18,000 people were displaced by tropical cyclone Gamane, which passed across northeastern Madagascar on Wednesday and Thursday. Three additional persons are still unaccounted for.

With average winds of 150 km/h and gusts of 210 km/h, Gamane made ashore north of Vohémar in northeastern Madagascar on Wednesday morning, according to the BNGRC.

The disaster management agency reported that it gradually subsided on Thursday afternoon while it was still over land. It had dumped a lot of rain, which resulted in flooding in numerous areas.

The BNRGC reported that bridges and roads in Madagascar’s north had collapsed. Images from the emergency management office’s Facebook page showed staff members helping people rescue possessions from their flooded homes while wading through knee-deep water.
