Ten suspects in the University of Fort Hare fraud and corruption case have been discharged by the Alice Magistrates Court, which is located in Dimbaza.

After taking into account certain changes in each accused person’s unique situation, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined to object to the 10 accused being granted bail.

The ten accused, who included former employees and service providers, were each given an R50,000 bond.

They are required to turn in their passports to the investigating officer and attend to their respective police stations every Wednesday as part of the terms of their bail.

According to NPA Regional Spokesman Luxolo Tyali, as of Friday, the state will fight three of the fifteen suspects’ requests for bail.

The three are Rapper AKA’s late bodyguard Anwar Khan, his friend Terrence Joubert, and the purported mastermind Isaac Plaatjies.

The National Task Team, which is looking into UFH criminality that has resulted in killings and attempted murders, arrested the group over the Easter weekend.

They are charged with working together to fraudulently award contracts through tender in exchange for cash payments.

The majority of the money purportedly went into the pockets of the accused university staff after the University paid more than R170 million.

The violent shootings of top staff members at UFH occurred prior to these tender contracts.

Plaajties is also accused alongside nine other individuals of killing vice-chancellor Sakhele Buhlungu’s bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, and fleet manager Petrus Roets of the University of Fort Hare.

In addition, he is charged with trying to kill Buhlungu and his deputy, Renuka Vithal.
