Brazil is Melting, with Scorching Heat Records of 62.3 Degrees

Brazil is experiencing a heat wave that is breaking records, with Rio de Janeiro’s heat index reaching an incredible 62.3 degrees Celsius. According to weather officials, Rio de Janeiro’s heat index reached 62.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the highest level in a decade, as a result of an oppressive heat wave that was suffocating the country.

The heat index calculates the relative temperature while accounting for humidity. The Alerta Rio weather system reported that the city’s actual highest temperature was 42 degrees Celsius.

At 09:55 local time, a record of 62.3 degrees Celsius was set in western Rio. This was the “highest mark” since Alerta Rio started recording such records in 2014. When authorities released heat-coping recommendations, the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches were crowded with visitors.

A Previous Record for the Brazil Heat Index was 59.7 Degrees

Raquel Correia, 49, an administrative assistant, bemoaned in a downtown Rio park, “I am very afraid it will get worse because the population is increasing a lot and deforestation is very high due to the increase in housing.”

When it reached 59.7 degrees Celsius in November of last year, the previous heat index record was set. Authorities predict that the severe rains that were causing havoc in the country’s south will last throughout next week.

Because of the heavy rains and storms expected this week, the central-south region of Brazil is at extremely high risk. The most concerning system is a strong cold front that is expected to bring with it heavy rain and possibly even gales, the weather service MetSul warned on Sunday.
