A woman who attempted to obtain a bank loan for an elderly guy she was pushing in a wheelchair has been taken into custody by Brazilian police. The man was found to be deceased.

When the woman wheeled the man in and asked for a loan in his name, bank employees in Rio de Janeiro were suspicious and summoned emergency authorities on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the police, emergency personnel discovered the man was dead when they arrived.

The woman was reported to police for attempted theft by fraud and defiling a cadaver by the Bangu precinct on Rio’s west side.

Inquiries are still on to find out how and when the man passed away.

According to reports from Brazilian media, the woman attempted to obtain a loan of 17,000 reais (about $3,250) on behalf of the 68-year-old male, claiming to be his niece.

According to local investigative chief Fabio Luiz, “she tried to make it look like he was signing the papers,” G1 news reported.

“But he was already dead when he entered the bank.”

The charges were refuted by the woman’s attorney.
