Budget Speech 2024: Latest Beer Can Price

A few cents extra will now be charged for a can of beer, as anticipated in the Budget Speech 2024.

On Wednesday, February 21, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana made the announcement about the increases during his Budget Speech for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

Every year, excise taxes rise. It was therefore not surprising that alcohol will now cost a few cents or even rands more, especially wine and spirits.

The Finance Minister announced a 4.9% increase in excise charges in line with anticipated inflation in his 2023 Budget Speech. Godongwana declared this year that its 2024–2025 budget would have above-inflation gains of 6.7%–7.2%.

  • A 340ml can of beer will now cost 14c more
  • A bottle of wine will cost 28c more
  • The price of a bottle of sparkling wine increases by 89c.

  • A bottle of 750ml spirits, including whisky, gin, or vodka will now cost R5.53 more.
  • A packet of 20 cigarettes costs an extra c more
  • A 23 gram cigar will now cost R more

The New Cost of Cigarettes

The government has also suggested raising the tobacco excise taxes on cigarettes and tobacco products by 4.7% and on pipe tobacco and cigars by 8.2%.

This corresponds to:

  • An increase of R9.51 cents for cigars;
  • An increase of 97 cents for a pack of cigarettes;
  • An additional 57 cents for a tobacco pipe.
