Charlotte Maxeke Hospital is Struggling to Get Supplies Due to Water Issues.

Due to inadequate water supply from Johannesburg Water, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital has announced that it will prioritize emergency cases and move elective surgery to other neighboring medical facilities.

Johannesburg Water and the Gauteng Health Department both attested to this.

Low water pressure was first noticed at the hospital early on Monday morning. Technicians conducted an inquiry and found that on September 13, Johannesburg Water had shut off the facility’s bulk water tanks.

Therefore, until Johannesburg Water resolves the water issues, hospital management has taken steps to prioritize emergency cases and move all elective surgeries to neighboring hospitals. Khutso Rabothata of the health department stated, “The department has secured the supply from Johannesburg Water and bottles of water which were delivered overnight in an effort to ensure patient care is not compromised.”

The department stated that it “remains committed to providing quality healthcare to all citizens” and that discussions with the utility were “ongoing to expedite a solution” to the problem.

Joburg Water acknowledged on Monday night that supply issues impacting Parktown 2 reservoir had an impact on the hospital.

The technical experts from Johannesburg Water are visiting the hospital looking for ways to increase their supply. The reservoir is almost completely empty. This results from the interaction of strong demand and low supply. In the supply zone, low to no water pressure is anticipated.

“Teams at Johannesburg Water are still looking into airlocks and the reason behind the low supply. The investigation takes a long time, the organization stated.

Although the reservoir has “been reconfigured to boost incoming supply,” according to Johannesburg Water, there is still no expected time of restoration.

“Improvements are, however, expected overnight.”

A status report on the Berea and Dunkeld reservoirs was also given; it stated that although the latter is “critically low to empty,” the former had fallen and is currently supplying fairly. The Parktown 2 reservoir’s performance has an impact on both.
