Chef and entrepreneur Lusizo Mvula Henna was found guilty of cheating the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and received a 10-year sentence.

The 41-year-old filed a fictitious R5 million VAT claim, leading to his conviction for fraud and money laundering.

Blaque Olive Private Chefs is owned by the chef who resides in Johannesburg.

He was found guilty on six charges of fraud and fourteen counts of money laundering, carrying a six-year prison sentence.

On Monday, April 22, the Johannesburg Specialized Commercial Crimes Court imposed the sentence.

Regional NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane stated that Magistrate Phindi Keswa discovered during the court proceedings that Henna had requested unjustified VAT refunds of R 5,3 million, of which Sars had paid out R 3,1 million.

Mjonondwane claimed that the magistrate discovered that Blaque Olive’s bank accounts showed no indications of trade activity consistent with these allegations.

The court determined that the only purpose of these allegations was to swindle Sars.
