City Power Will Fix the M1 Tunnel Fire With R23 Million.

The M1Bridge underground tunnel fire last week still has portions without power, therefore repair work is ongoing to guarantee that those regions get power again.

Officials from City Power stated on Wednesday that it might take until May 20th to completely repair the damaged cables.

The power company did, however, state that other approaches to provide impacted residents with relief were being given priority.

During his report on the situation, city manager Floyd Brink stated that the fire-affected Braamfontein sub-station was still offline while repairs were being made.

A significant portion of Braamfontein, Newtown, and Parktown West are still without electricity.

According to City Power, until the repair work is finished, it may explore sharing the available load by supplying power on a rotating basis.

Brink bemoaned the growing number of instances of infrastructure sabotage in the city at the same time.

The high degree of infrastructure sabotage that is affecting the City of Johannesburg’s capacity to provide services worries us.

He added that the police had received a criminal complaint.

Brink verified that City Power would be collaborating closely with the police and had been assigned a case number.

About 300 meters of stolen cable were discovered by City Power authorities during an investigation of the impacted infrastructure last week, and they concluded that this was probably the reason of the fire.

Alongside the cables, officials discovered equipment that appeared to have been used to cut them.

While the M1 Bridge has been made safe for transportation, several roadways underneath the bridge are still off-limits to the general public.
