Corruption Within SASSA: Two Detained in Bribery Case

A corruption scandal centered around the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office in Roodeport’s major business sector emerged. As a result, two individuals, ages 45 and 70, were taken into custody.

The detainees, who were taken into custody on Wednesday, April 24 at the SASSA headquarters, are expected to appear in court for the first time on Friday, April 26 at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court.

The suspects are said to have asked an SASSA employee for assistance. They were putting forth a plan to falsely register elderly people for social subsidies. Reports state that every application included a R1000 bribe to accelerate processing.

As soon as the suspects turned over the first batch of fifteen applications, the SASSA corruption plan got more complicated. offering the worker a sizable sum of R15,000 in exchange for avoiding formalities. On Wednesday, the suspects provided a second batch of 20 applications and R23,150 in cash, which caused the situation to drastically change. They were apprehended by law enforcement authorities shortly after their ostentatious behavior.

An unregistered gun and ammunition cache were discovered by detectives after a thorough search of the suspects’ car.

The Hawks released a statement saying, “The team found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition upon searching the suspects’ vehicle.”

This worrying discovery highlights the suspects’ arrogance as well. Concerns are also raised regarding possible risks to public safety.

The corruption plan has major financial repercussions. It has been stated that SASSA is facing an R38 150 prejudice because to the fraudulent operations.

During their court appearance, the suspects will be charged with ammunition possession, possession of an unregistered firearm, and corruption.
