Man to Appear in Court Who Caused Accident Involving Jacob Zuma

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a spokesman for the South African Police Service (SAPS), confirmed what was previously reported: the accident occurred on the R66 on Thursday at approximately 18:40.

According to Mathe, a 51-year-old male was charged with dangerous and negligent driving in addition to driving while intoxicated.

“The man’s car struck the official armored state vehicle of former President Jacob Zuma. Former President Zuma and his guards were in the car at the time of the crash.

“No one was hurt, not even the members of the Presidential Protection Services (PPS). Zuma was evacuated and brought to his home, according to Mathe.

Zuma was reportedly making the trip from Nkandla to Eshowe in order to promote his uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party.

Mk Party Reacts to Accident

Nhlamulo Ndlela, the spokeswoman for the UMkhonto We Sizwe party, demanded that Police Minister Bheki Cele be questioned about Jacob Zuma’s security details after the tragedy. The party thinks the former president was the target of a murder attempt.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a spokesman for the SAPS, stated that Cele is confident that the security put in place to safeguard Zuma is adequate and comparable to that of other prior heads of state after the SAPS management gave the Ministry a detailed briefing.

“The Ministry deems it dangerous and improper that Nhlamulo Ndlela, the spokesperson for the uMkhonto We Sizwe party, called for the Minister of Police to be questioned regarding Jacob Zuma’s security details.

She said, “Neither the Ministry nor the SAPS will be disclosing any security information about any head of state of the Republic of South Africa, living or dead.”
