Customers are Cautioned by Johannesburg City Power not to Tamper With Smart Meters

Customers of Johannesburg’s City Power have been forewarned that tampering with and circumventing recently installed smart meters would result in severe penalties and immediate power outage.

During the course of replacing outdated and malfunctioning meters, the electricity company claims to have seen an unsettling pattern of meter alteration.

According to City Power, it installed smart meters in all of its service delivery centers last year, including those with unauthorized connections in Alexandra, Naturena, and Mayibuye.

According to Isaac Mangena, a spokesman for City Power, the company is also looking into potential contractor and staff involvement in smart meter manipulation and circumvention.

Residents will be disconnected and have to pay a reconnection charge if it is discovered that they have tampered with recently placed meters. The security management team of the organization is pursuing multiple leads in relation to internal partners, and soon there will be consequences. As we have shown in the past, City Power will not hold back when it comes to taking legal action against anyone connected to any kind of criminal activity.”
