Democratic Alliance Formally Moves to Remove Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula From Office

Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula

Mapisa-Nqakula should have resigned, according to DA Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarube, rather than taking a special leave of absence in response to corruption reports. In anticipation of accusations of corruption and money laundering, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a formal Motion of No Confidence in MNC National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

Siviwe Gwarube, the chief whip for the party, stated that Mapisa-special Nqakula should have resigned rather than merely taking a leave of absence.

It Would Have Been Better to Have Resigned Rather Than Taken Special Leave – DA

“We are forced to file a formal motion of no confidence to be discussed and decided upon before the House rises and this term expires due to the announcement that she has taken’special leave,’ not resigned,” Gwarube stated on Friday.

She said that “special leave” taken by a member on their own initiative is not covered by the rules of Parliament. The House must convene in full to authorize a special leave of absence. As an alternative, a member may request and receive five days of special leave from their political party. It appears from the ANC’s communication from last night that this is not the case, Gwarube clarified.

DA Says That a Special Leave is Just a Cop-Out

She added that the Speaker was merely using the special leave as a “cop-out.”

According to Gwarube, the DA has called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and other law enforcement organizations to take the required actions to stop Mapisa-Nqakula from fleeing the nation, given that the Speaker may be arrested.

She remarked, “She can’t leave the country without facing the consequences because she pledged to cooperate with the investigation.”

“Mapisa-Nqakula must resign or be removed through a motion of no confidence,” Gwarube continued. Anything less will be a mockery to South Africa and Parliament, above all.
