Five Celebrities From South Africa Who Died in Failed Hijackings

Luke Fleurs was shot on Wednesday night during a hijacking at a gas station in Honeydew.

As per Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the spokesperson for Gauteng police, the football player from Kaizer Chiefs was ambushed while driving a red Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI.

Masondo stated to IOL that he was approached by two armed men who arrived in a white BMW 1 Series as he was waiting to be helped by the gas station attendant.

“The suspects got him out of his car and pointed a gun at him. then gave him a single upper body shot. One suspect and his accomplice took off driving the victim’s vehicle.

After being sent to the closest hospital, Luke was declared dead upon arrival.

Luke Fleurs was not the only famous person to pass away as a result of a hijacking. These are some more well-known cases.

Lucky Dube

Reggae artist Lucky Dube, an award winner, was shot and died in front of his two children during a botched hijacking in 2007, leaving South Africans devastated.

The 43-year-old musician had made a stop at his brother’s Johannesburg residence in Rosettenville at that time. Dube attempted to escape in his Chrysler after being shot close range, but it crashed into a tree, according to IOL.

Two years later, on charges of attempted robbery, murder, and other offenses, the three individuals responsible for the shooting received life sentences.

Gito Baloi

Jazz musician and bassist Gito Baloi was shot and killed by hijackers on April 4, 2004, exactly 20 years ago, while traveling home from a performance in Pretoria.

His killers, according to Mail & Guardian, have never been apprehended.

Masilela Dumisani

Five guys were found guilty in 2021 of Dumi Masilela’s murder at Rhythm City. TimesLive says that they received a life sentence.

On August 3, 2017, a failed hijacking occurred in Tembisa that resulted in Dumi being shot in the stomach. Dumi, who was married to Simz Ngema, another actress, drove himself to the hospital following the tragedy but eventually passed away from his severe injuries.

Following her husband’s death, Simz said to The Sowetan, “I knew that it was meant to happen the way that it happened.” However, I didn’t think there was a compelling enough cause.

“I would pose those queries to God: why is it happening? Everyone says everything occurs for a reason, but I never understood why. Even though I didn’t comprehend, I continued to believe in God. God, I believe, was the only thing in my life that made sense at the time. I remained sane because of it.

Zikhali Jeffrey

After a disastrous hijacking, TV personality Jeffrey Zikhali was discovered on the side of a busy road in December 2023.

Zikhala was shot and killed while traveling to his home in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, according to the SABC.

There is no information available regarding the arrests of the suspects in this case.
