Five people have lost their lives as a result of last night’s flooding in Margate, on the South Coast, according to KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi.

A nearby stream overflowed its banks and rushed through the tourist town, causing significant damage to the surrounding area and the sea.

A significant portion of the promenade has been gouged out, trees and roadways have been washed away, and cars have been flipped over and crushed.

According to Brandon Lehman of The Grove Restaurant and Beach Bar on the waterfront, yesterday afternoon’s rain started after 4 o’clock but intensified into a significant downpour by 7 o’clock.

Hunters Stream breached its banks, according to Lehman. He asserts that the destruction was brought about by improper upkeep along the stream’s banks and a blocked storm water drainage system.

Roads and other important infrastructure are gone. Our building’s foundations have been harmed, our support pillars have been taken, and the restaurant has been severely impacted. We are unable to function at this time. The Margate seafront has been entirely wrecked, as you can also see here. And all of this is because of a single, tiny river that is more appropriately named Hunters Stream. Sadly, it’s all the result of poor maintenance. Our hope is that the municipality will be able to assist us in rebuilding and restructuring in a way that is appropriate.

Teams in charge of disaster management are working hard to remove fallen trees from roads where water has also resulted in sinkholes.

Up until midnight tonight, further severe thunderstorms are predicted to develop along the coastal districts up to Durban, according to a level 5 warning from the South African Weather Service.

According to Simon April, a spokesman for the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, search and rescue operations are underway.

We have simply recovered three bodies as of right now. It is that of a child, a woman, and a man. Their car swept away, but we think they were attempting to cross a low-lying bridge. We discovered their dead next to a river along the N2 highway, where they had been washed away. We recently learned that a lightning strike resulted in one person’s death at Ward 29.
