Today in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane, five men are scheduled to be sentenced for the assassination of Councillor Moses Maluleke, the mayor of the Collins Chabane Municipality.

On the accusations of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition, Shumani Nemadodzi (48), Avhatakali Isaac Mudau (39), Wiseman Baloyi (37), Tshianeo Munyai (32) and Pfunzo Lidzebe (33), were found guilty.

On July 21, 2022, in the evening, Maluleke was assassinated at his residence in Xikundu village.

After gaining entry to the deceased’s property, the accused shot him while he was with his 18-year-old son.

Someone stole his cellphone.

The state used a key witness, whose testimony was recognized by the court under section 204 of Act 51 of 1977.

According to Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, a spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority, the court determined that the witness provided truthful and candid testimony.

“This witness admitted to committing these crimes along with all of the defendants and additional unidentified individuals.

“The court found that the state has proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and that the accused at all times were acting in the furtherance of a common purpose and that the offences committed by the accused were planned.”
