Gauteng’s Water Network Now Has More Leaks

According to the Water and Sanitation Department, a lack of maintenance by municipalities has resulted in a rise in leakage in Gauteng’s municipal water distribution systems during the last ten years.

The City of Johannesburg has been dealing with significant water disruptions for the last few weeks. According to the department, a second phase of the Lesotho Highlands project has been planned in order to supply Gauteng with additional water from the mountains.

Dr. Sean Phillips, the director general, asked all the municipalities in Gauteng to practice water conservation and prevent leaks.

The general populace in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and other municipalities must use water more wisely. The issue is that, in the current system, demand for water from rainwater is extremely close to supply during heatwaves and other disruptions caused by, say, electrical breakdowns. This makes it extremely difficult for reservoirs to fill and subsequently supply water to high-lying areas. Thus, those are the primary reasons for Johannesburg’s current predicament.
