In an effort to combat poverty and lower unemployment, the KwaZulu-Natal Public Works Department has stated that the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) will continue.

The 2003 introduction of the EPWP aims to provide vulnerable, impoverished, and inexperienced workers with short-term employment options.

MEC Sipho Nkosi emphasized that the department wants to make sure that every home has at least one member who benefits from the program.

According to Nkosi, the Department of Public Works has committed to creating thousands of EPWP employment in the province of KZN over the course of the next five years. To ensure that at least one person in these homes finds work and can put food on the table, we are making sure to identify those with high unemployment rates.

“Through this program, more than 14 jobs have been created in the two departments—the Department of Transport and Public Works—that launched this program for the following five years,” he continues.
