Jose Riveiro, head coach of the Orlando Pirates, has revealed why Tshegofatso Mabasa is a good number nine for his team.

Mabasa Returns to Orlando Pirates Well Settled

After two loan stints away from the team, Tshegofatso Mabasa has expressed his ambition, which has satisfied Jose Riveiro. The 27-year-old has what it takes, according to the Pirates manager, to develop into a reliable goal scorer and all-around striker for the Buccaneers.

Mabasa has scored twice in his last three games after coming back. He was recalled after a spell on loan with Sekhukhune, then at the beginning of 2023–2024, he was placed out on loan once more, this time to Moroka Swallows. During that period, Mabasa scored six goals for the Dube Birds. In contrast, Patrick Maswanganyi has made 29 appearances this season and has contributed 12 direct goals for the team. Rumor has it that a Belgian team is closely examining the 25-year-old.

“Mabasa (the bear) fits the bill for what we are looking for in his role. He is a striker who can improve our performance. Everyone is aware of Tshegofatso’s abilities both inside and outside the box, as well as his timing when flying. The Bucs mentor remarked, “He’s very complete.”

“But he’s also getting better when he plays outside the box and gives us a lot more; we don’t think of the number nine as a player who just finishes plays inside the box.”

“We need a player who can improve our play, play the style of football we want to play, stay in contact with the ball, and control the middle of the field.”

“A striker who can open up space for our three number 10s is what we want.”

Guarding the Pirates is a Difficult Job

The Spanish manager of Bucs explained that all of his attackers have difficult tasks to complete and expressed his happiness that Mabasa is scoring again in lieu of Bafana star Evidence Makgopa. Since his return, he has scored three goals in the Nedbank Cup, two of which came against Crystal Lake and the Hungry Lions. The reigning winners will play AmaZulu in the quarterfinals.

“Everyone who is a striker has a challenging task to complete while they are on the field. Tshego is doing well thus far, which is advantageous for both him and the squad because he is finding the net—a crucial skill for a number nine.
