Precious Mashele, who was the most reliable performer in 2023, is looking forward to his second competition of the 2024 series, the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10km, which takes place on May 12.

Mashele, who won a bronze medal in the 5,000-meter event at the Athletic SA Senior Track & Field Championships on Saturday, has declared himself ready to compete in the renowned Mother City 10-kilometer race.

At the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, Mashele finished behind winners Adriaan Wildschutt and Elroy Gelant with the silver medal. “I’m happy with my bronze medal at the championships because the race was very tough,” Mashele said.

“I’m quite pleased with my purchase. My physical condition is improving. I can claim that, despite not being where I want to be just now, I’m roughly 70% of where I ought to be.

“But I have the momentum, and I believe I’ll get the shape I want in due time.”

East African Competitors

In the sweltering 5 000m final at the African Games in Ghana in March, he finished in the top eight with a time of 13:46.19, despite not being as fit as he would like to be yet.

After that, he placed third (28:19) in the Gqeberha 10km race that took place earlier in April.

Mashele, who competed for South Africa in the Tokyo Olympics while wearing the colors of Boxer Athletics Club, is optimistic that his track fitness will convert into success in the road running series, where he has placed fourth out of five times in his previous five starts.

He feels that the reason he does well in the Run Your City series is that elite athletes are invited, which helps him run faster. He is thrilled to be a part of the Cape Town event because of this.

“I run quickly when I’m with East Africans, and I flee from South Africans.” I therefore think it’s a great chance to run alongside the East Africans.
