Munya Chawawa Traveling to North Korea With "How to Survive a Dictator" From Channel 4

Munya Chawawa is traveling to one of the most infamous locations on the planet with his BAFTA-nominated How to Survive a Dictator brand.

Through a Channel 4 documentary by Late Night Lycett producer Rumpus Media, which will be at Sheffield DocFest next month, the viral comedian is bringing attention to Kim Jong-Un of North Korea.

For How to Survive a Dictator: North Korea, Chawawa—who is well-known for his distinct brand of satirical humor and a frequent guest on British TV—will travel to suburban West London, Seoul, and Switzerland. He will locate a school friend of Kim’s and meet those who have personally witnessed the effects of the Kim regime. Although Kim is frequently portrayed in the West as a crazy person prepared to blow up the world, over his 12-year rule, he has surprised detractors by forging close relationships with Vladimir Putin, Dennis Rodman, and Donald Trump.

“Recently, it’s been difficult to avoid experiencing “apocalypse anxiety,” and a lot of that is related to North Korea and Kim Jong Un, so working on this documentary has been both fascinating and strangely satisfying for me,” Chawawa said.

Robert Mugabe was the subject of Chawawa’s debut How to Survive a Dictator, which earned the team a BAFTA nomination in the Specialist Factual category.

“In his utterly unique style Munya Chawawa, with the exceptional team from Rumpus led by Iain Wimbush, will explore the world of Kim Jong Un in a surprising and compelling way,” said Channel 4’s chief factual officer Shaminder Nahal.

The project is being produced by Wimbush, the former boss of Rumpus, and Morgan Roberts. Wimbush left Rumpus and is currently starting his own independent label. The director and producer is Tomasz Frymorgan.
