Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, National Assembly, is Scheduled to be Detained on Friday Over Money Laundering of R4 Million

Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the speaker of the National Assembly, is reportedly scheduled to be detained on Friday. Upon her apprehension, she is anticipated to face charges related to corruption and money laundering over R4 million.

Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly solicited and received “gratification” from one businessman during her nine-year term as the minister of defense and military veterans, according to several top investigators and a government official who spoke with the Mail & Guardian.

Plans for the speaker’s arrest reportedly started around three weeks ago, according to two sources with knowledge of the probe, while she was in Paris, France for the 2024 Women Speakers’ Summit on March 6 and 7.

Her arrest was anticipated, a senior government official revealed on Friday. The official stated that if Thursday hadn’t been a public holiday, Mapisa-Nqakula would have been taken into custody.

“After receiving more than R4 million from a businessman, she will be prosecuted with corruption and money laundering, according to a draft charge sheet that has been created. She has consented to turn herself in to the Pretoria police, where she will be detained and brought before the magistrate’s court to face charges, according to an unidentified source.

The directorate authorized a raid on the speaker’s Johannesburg home on Monday, which is expected to result in her detention.
