Of the 28 People Saved, Six Died When the George Building Collapsed.

Plans for a residential complex with 42 apartments were submitted by the developer in December 2022, and the plans were accepted by the municipality in July 2023.
Twenty-seven hours after the collapse, on Tuesday afternoon, forty-seven laborers remained buried in debris at the construction site in George, Western Cape.

Western Cape premier Alan Winde updated the media at 2:30 p.m., stating that 28 out of the 75 workers who were at the scene had been rescued. Six of the 28 were deemed deceased.

According to Winde, the province had hired independent structural experts to investigate the reason of the collapse, and the department of employment and labor inspectors as well as Western Cape emergency management were on the site. Working to extricate those buried beneath the debris were about 200 people present at the scene.

The site’s developers, Neotrend Group, presented construction plans to the municipality in December 2022, and on July 6, 2023, the plans were accepted, according to George Mayor Leon van Wyk.

The structure, which occupied 1,228 square meters, included 42 residential apartments spread across four stories, an 887 square meter basement, and above-ground parking.

“There are four times as much building material—3,600 square meters of construction—standing on parking above ground,” Van Wyk stated.

Winde stated that he is informing the workers’ families of any updates.

“Throughout the night, there will be continuous briefings.”
