Online taxi services, on Wednesday, Uber is providing reduced rates for users in South Africa to go to and from polling places.

Uber South Africa has released a promotional offer for Wednesday, May 29, the day on which South Africans will vote in the general elections of 2024.

According to the tech startup, voters can save up to 35% on their two excursions on election day—that is, the drive to and from their assigned polling place.

According to Kagiso Khaole, General Manager of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, “ensuring that anyone and everyone can exercise their right to vote is a cornerstone of a vibrant and inclusive democracy.”

On voting day, the first 50,000 riders who enter the promotional code on the app will receive a 35% discount. A ride must cost more than R40 in order to be eligible for the promotion.

The standard terms and conditions of Uber will still be in effect.

“At Uber, we want to do our part to ensure that every voice is heard because every vote counts. We recognize that being able to make an impact during a significant moment for the nation, like the general elections, requires convenient and dependable transportation,” Khaole continued.

Southern Africa Has Seen the Launch of Uber Teen Accounts.

In other Uber news, last month the international transportation giant announced that Uber Teen accounts would be available throughout South Africa.

With additional safety and security precautions, this will allow minors between the ages of 13 and 17 to hail transportation.

In order to allow guardians to keep an eye on the entire journey, the solution is connected to the Uber profiles of the parents and guardians.

Tight Screening and Background Investigations

This new service will have automated audio recording, travel monitoring, location-based security response, and AI algorithms that can identify detours and extended stops among its safety features.

Teen account holders are able to request trips only from highly regarded, seasoned drivers who have passed background checks and local screening procedures.

Teen riders are unable to change the location after the trip has started, but guardians will have the ability to communicate with drivers at any time during the journey.

“Uber Teen accounts are designed to be transparent, ensuring that parents, teens, and drivers don’t encounter any unexpected situations,” Khoale stated.

“Real-time notifications will be sent to parents, who can monitor their journey in real-time.”

Teens must give drivers a unique personal identification number, or pin, before embarking on a journey in order to increase safety. This will guarantee that teenagers are put in the appropriate car with the appropriate driver.
