A parliamentary committee claims it lacks the authority to look into the DA’s allegation against Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the former speaker.

In preparation for Mapisa-Nqakula’s subsequent arrest and court appearance last week on 12 counts of fraud and one of money laundering, DA chief whip Siviwe Gwarube filed a formal complaint on March 6.

Gwarube demanded a “swift, impartial, and comprehensive” probe of the claims made by Xolile George, the Secretary of Parliament, over her pay raise.

The Powers and Privileges Committee declared on Wednesday that it lacked jurisdiction to review the matter since Mapisa-Nqakula had resigned from her roles as speaker and member of parliament.

According to legal opinion, their rights are limited to MPs, according to Chairperson Manketsi Tlhape.

As a result, the committee lacks authority to review a subject pertaining to a former member of parliament.

Tlhape stated, “The committee lacks jurisdiction to look into the chief whip of the opposition’s complaint because the former speaker resigned as a member of Parliament.”
