Philippe Troussier, the Former Bafana Bafana Coach, was Fired as Vietnam’s Manager

After less than a year in office, Philippe Troussier’s tenure as Vietnam’s coach came to an end when irate supporters turned against the Frenchman.

Vietnam’s tenure under Frenchman Philippe Troussier as coach has come to an end after just a year in office due to back-to-back losses to Indonesia in World Cup qualifying, a neighboring country.

Five days after losing 1-0 on the road to the same opponents, Vietnam’s chances of advancing to the next qualifying round were all but destroyed on Tuesday after a 3-0 home loss to Indonesia.

Following the match, irate home supporters screamed for the 69-year-old to be fired. It was Vietnam’s first home loss to Indonesia in almost 20 years.

Following their discussions with Troussier, Vietnamese football chiefs released a statement announcing their decision to end his contract.

Vietnam’s football organization released a statement saying, “Mr. Philippe Troussier thanked the support from the players, clubs, football federation as well as the fans.”

“The team’s performance fell short of expectations, and he also expressed regret to the Vietnamese fans.”

In addition to managing two dozen teams or nations, Troussier has extensive experience and was the coach of Vietnam’s under-23 team.

In February of last year, Troussier announced his intention to lead the senior national team to their first-ever World Cup, agreeing to a three-year contract.

Vietnam has three points from four games, good for third place in their qualification group. The top two alone advance to the next round.

With 12 points, Iraq leads the group and has already advanced, with Indonesia close behind them in second place with seven points.

After replacing Jomo Sono, Troussier, then 69, guided Bafana Bafana to the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

After losing 3-0 to their hosts France, drawing 1-1 with Denmark, and losing 2-2 to Saudi Arabia in their Group C games, Bafana Bafana was eliminated in the group stages.

In 1994, Troussier also led Kaizer Chiefs for a limited period of time.
