President of South Sudan Dismisses Finance Minister in the Midst of Economic Turmoil

President of South Sudan dismisses Finance Minister in the midst of economic turmoil

The finance minister of South Sudan was dismissed by President Salva Kiir without providing an explanation, despite the fact that the decision coincides with rising inflation and a significant decline in the value of the local currency relative to the US dollar.

A proclamation read aloud on state television late on Friday confirmed the minister Bak Barnaba Chol’s removal.

In addition, some government employees have not received their salaries for six months as the nation’s economic crisis has gotten worse.

The South Sudanese pound, the local currency, has lost about half of its value against the US dollar during the last two months, which has led to an increase in the cost of food and other necessities.

Chol, a 43-year-old Kiir supporter, was named finance minister in August of last year and has since implemented a number of changes, such as clearing the government employment database of “ghost staff” and sealing off revenue leaks.

To take his place, Kiir named Awow Daniel Chuong, a former minister of petroleum.
