Proteas Women are Defeated by Sri Lanka by Seven Wickets

In Potchefstroom on Saturday afternoon, Sri Lanka’s national women’s cricket team defeated the Proteas women by seven wickets to tie the three-match series. The Proteas women elected to bat after winning the toss and gave the visiting team a target of 138 to win.

With seven balls to go, the hosts overshot the mark to secure the win.

The Proteas women lost a wicket in the fourth over after winning the toss and choosing to bat. With 26 runs on the board for the South Africans, Achini Kulasuriya dismissed Tazmin Britz for seven.

The Proteas women reached 84 runs thanks to 58 runs each from Marizanne Kapp and Anneke Bosch. Bosch achieved a half-century during the process, but Kavisha Dilhari quickly ended her outstanding performance in the tenth over.

The Proteas ladies collapsed, reducing the number of survivors to 118. They lost seven wickets for 19 runs when Chamali Athaphaththu bowled Karabo Meso out for a duck.

With 20 overs remaining, the hosts reached 137.

Before the Proteas ladies struck, the visitors responded with 25 runs. Meso caught Athaphaththu behind for six off Tumi Sekhukhune’s bowling.

The visitors reached 56 runs thanks to 31 runs each from Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama, before the latter was dismissed after 12 runs.

The second person to go was Hasini Perera. Nadine De Klerk sent her packing for a single. With seven balls remaining, Gunaratne and Dilhari took the visitors across the boundary to complete the victory.
