Residents of eThekwini Can Now Access Landfill Sites Despite the Strike

The eThekwini Municipality is now accepting public rubbish drop-offs at its dump locations.

This is because the ongoing eThekwini Municipal workers’ strike is causing disruptions to waste collection services.

According to Gugu Sisilana, a spokesman for the eThekwini municipality, “Until regular collection resumes, residents are allowed to bring a bakkie load of waste.” Businesses can also use these dump sites. Residents can use the following landfill sites: Illovu Landfill Site, Buffelsdraai Landfill Site, Mariannhill Landfill Site, and Bisasar Road Landfill Site. Operating hours are from 7:00 a.m. to half past four p.m., Monday through Friday. They are open once more on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. until half past three p.m.

The province’s healthcare services are also impacted by the strike.

It was revealed on Thursday that due to a burst transformer, medical staff at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital fought three days without electricity.

The current strike is said to be the reason why substation repairs have halted.

SAMWU members are requesting that their pay be changed to reflect that of workers in other metro areas.

A number of patients were discharged from the hospital due to malfunctioning hospital units. Clinics in Craigieburn, on the south coast, and Hambanathi, north of Durban, have been temporarily shuttered due to the strike, according to a statement released by the municipality.
