Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana, has been connected to several teams in recent weeks, but Safa says the Belgian coach will remain.
Hugo Broos’ contract with Bafana Bafana is scheduled to expire in 2026, as confirmed by the South African Football Association (Safa). This follows rumors that the Belgian coach will be moving to Tunisia. After their disappointing Afcon campaign, Broos is expected to take over as the nation’s football coach in place of Jalel Kadri.
After leading Bafana to a third-place result at this year’s Afcon, the former Cameroon coach was reportedly planning to leave South Africa a few days later. As per Mosaïque FM, Broos was expected to replace Bafana with the 2004 Afcon winners. In response to the allegations, Safa has stated that Broos would continue to lead Bafana.
Nothing has changed since the coach’s response to this very same issue a few days ago at a Zoom press briefing with South African reporters. “We are currently training at the match venue,” the head of communications for SAFA said to IOL Sport on Monday. Hugo Broos was also connected to a position at Club Brugge in Belgium last month.
Safa Refuses to Accept Broos’s Tunisian Job
The 71-year-old has stated he was committed to his work with Bafana and has denied having talks with other teams.
Last month, Broos declared, “There is nothing.”
“I have stated following the AFC Championship that if you perform well with a team, coaching interest will naturally arise.
“I’ve heard rumors that Brugge, Tunisia, Algeria, and a few more teams are interested. However, there are once more no talks.
Before his contract expires, Broos may go from Babana Babana.
Safa maintains that nothing has changed with regard to Broos’ contract, but it seems as though the 71-year-old coach is considering his alternatives.
He recently disclosed that, following Bafana’s 5-0 loss to France in 2022, he nearly quit from his job.
