Santaco Cancels the Taxi Strike in Ekurhuleni

The National Taxi Council (Santaco) of South Africa has declared that taxi services in Ekurhuleni will start up again on Friday.

The taxi strike that stranded thousands of commuters in majority of Johannesburg’s east Rand is expected to last longer. This comes after negotiations between the City of Ekurhuleni, taxi organizations, and the Gauteng provincial government broke down.

Thursday saw the start of the negotiations in Ekurhuleni following numerous passengers’ detours.

In opposition to a contract given to a private bus firm to transport local communities, the taxi sector went on strike.

Taxi groups sought the immediate release of seven state-impaired vehicles as well as four of their colleagues who had been arrested for a variety of offenses.

Affected areas included Tembisa, Germiston, Vosloorus, and other portions of the city.

Zweli Dlamini, a spokesman for the City of Ekurhuleni, claims that the talks are at a standstill. “Yet, as a city, we continue to have hope that talks will pick back up soon, and hopefully, we’ll find a long-term solution and be able to witness the restoration of our people’s transportation to various destinations.”
