Senegal’s Incoming President, Faye, is Congratulated by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye received congratulations from President Cyril Ramaphosa on his election to the office of President of the Republic of Senegal.

With 54.28 percent of the vote in the first round, Faye easily won the country’s presidential election; however, the validation of the results by Senegal’s highest constitutional body is still pending.

After his challenger conceded, Faye became Senegal’s youngest president ever at 44 years old.

This is the first time an opposition candidate has won the first round of voting in the twelve presidential elections conducted under universal suffrage since Senegal separated from France in 1960.

Ten days prior to the nation’s election, three weeks prior, Faye and Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko were freed from Dakar prison, according to both one of their attorneys and an AFP journalist.

According to Ramaphosa, the election’s result demonstrates the Senegalese people’s tenacious spirit, since they opted for a democratic transition of power by voting.

He praised the other candidates even more for showing maturity in embracing the results of the election.
