Sheffield United Wants to Guarantee an Undesirable Spot in the Premier League

Sheffield United has avoided one unpleasant Premier League record thus far, but with relegation back to the Championship looming, Chris Wilder’s team is headed for another.

After being humiliated 6-0 at home by Arsenal on Monday, the basement team now shares 13 points with Burnley, who also appear to be near certainties to be relegated.

Both have eclipsed Derby County’s record of 11 points from 2007–08 to claim the title of worst team in Premier League history.

However, Sheffield United is poised to break Swindon Town’s record of 100 goals given up in 1993–94 because to their leaky defense.

After 27 Premier League games, the Yorkshire club’s defensive record is the worst ever, having given up 72 goals at an average of 2.67 per game.

Only the 73 goals Doncaster Rovers gave up in the fourth division in 1997–98 have been leaked after 27 games in any of England’s top four leagues.

If the current trend average persists, which there is minimal indication of it not doing so, Wilder’s club is poised to become the inaugural Premier League team to give up more than 100 goals.

Swindon’s season total came from 42 games, whereas Ipswich Town gave up 93 goals in 42 games. Derby’s 89 goals conceded in a 38-game season is a record.

With Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United remaining to play, large swathes of Sheffield United supporters fled after Arsenal took a 3-0 lead in just 15 minutes.

On Saturday, Sheffield United will visit Bournemouth.
