Somerset Mall is Closed Due to Roof Sheeting Blown Off by Severe Western Cape Winds.

Strong winds in the Western Cape have ripped roof sheeting off the Somerset Mall, closing it.

DRM spokesperson Charlotte Powell said the facility is being evacuated and inspected by a building inspector. DRM is on.

Management posted on Facebook that the centre would close owing to ‘the risks linked with the present severe high winds and weather we are experiencing in the area’. It further added that the ‘safety of our consumers and staff is our top priority, and with the level 9 warning given by the South African Weather Services, we believe this is the wisest decision for all.’

Winds have pulled roofs off Morkels Cottage and the Donkerbos informal colony in Somerset West, prompting DRM to respond.

Several persons have been injured and emergency medical personnel are on the scene.

Nicola Jowell, Ward 54 Councillor, reports multiple roofs blown off in Somerset West, Macassar, Mitchells Plain, and Clifton.

City Recreation and Parks is removing uprooted trees in Somerset West, Macassar, Sea Point, and Philippi.

Jowell advises residents to bring outside furniture indoors or secure it because solar panels, roof sheets, and scaffolding are flying around. She warns that rain is coming and the wind is not as fierce as forecast.
