South Africa’s Most Dangerous Cities to Live In

Gqeberha identified as the most dangerous SA city

Four cities in South Africa are among the world’s 50 most dangerous cities. Gqeberha, the new name for Nelson Mandela Bay, has eclipsed Durban and Cape Town to become the nation’s most violent metropolis.

The Top 50 Report

This is based on the yearly study that the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice releases, which lists the world’s 50 most dangerous cities. The report only includes cities with populations larger than 300,000 and uses the number of homicides per 100,000 people as its criterion.

Cape Town was among the top 10 cities out of 50 in earlier studies. Cape Town, though, is now ranked seventeenth in the most recent study.

Among the top 50 are four cities in South Africa. But leading the pack, according to Business Tech, is Gqeberha, which is currently ranked in the top 10.

South Africa Proudly Tops the List

This image is consistent with the information that the South African Cities Network (SACN) made available at the conclusion of the previous year. Data about crime and safety conditions in SA cities can be found in the SACN report.

The bulk of the slots on the top 50 list of most hazardous cities have been occupied by South American cities for more than a decade. Other American countries like the United States, Haiti, and Jamaica have also left their mark alongside them. The one non-American nation listed in this ranking is South Africa, which makes it stand out.

A Growing Trend in Deaths

Only five cities on the list had more than 2,000 murders reported; three of those were in South Africa.

Despite Gqeberha’s lower ranking, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban all saw increases in murder rates from 2022–2024, with the following percentages:

Cape Town: -0.9%
5.6% in Durban
Johannesburg (8,1%).
During the same time frame, Gqeberha’s murder rate rose by 21.3%.

Massive Concerns

It is clear from these facts that there has been an increase in violence in South Africa. The study’s four cities have all steadily moved up the ranks, suggesting a rise in violent incidents.

Johannesburg is currently included on the list each year, despite not being on it for half of the previous ten years. It is also getting closer to being included as one of the top 20 cities in the world for homicide rates.

Originally placed lower on the list, Durban and Gqeberha have risen to the top. There is a worrying trend as their murder rates have increased.

It is difficult to hold Nelson Mandela Bay inhabitants accountable these days for their reluctance to leave their houses. We’re not even safe at home, really. Because of the reign of terror that criminals in our beautiful Bay are waging, a lot of individuals have turned into neurotic wrecks who constantly worry about becoming statistics.
