Tanzania Reported That a Cyclone That Hit the Nation on Saturday Had Weakened and Posed No Threat.

As it moved into Tanzania and neighboring Kenya, countries already pounded by torrential downpours and floods that have killed over 400 people in East Africa in recent weeks, Tropical Cyclone Hidaya unleashed strong winds and rain.

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority claimed in a statement that was released early on Sunday on X that Hidaya had “completely lost its strength” following her landfall on Mafia Island in the Indian Ocean on Saturday.

“Therefore, there is no further threat of Tropical Cyclone ‘Hidaya’ in our country,” it stated.

As the nation prepared for the hurricane, beaches along the Indian Ocean coast were empty, businesses were shut down, and marine transportation in the Zanzibar archipelago was suspended.

Although the storm produced far more rainfall than usual in coastal areas as it approached, no injuries or damage were reported.

Due to floods and landslides caused by El Nino-related torrential rains that occurred last month, at least 155 people have died in Tanzania.

A total of 210 people have died in flood-related accidents in neighboring Kenya, which had also taken precautions for the cyclone.
