Task Force to Look Into Killings of Members of Abahlali Base Mjondolo

A police task team in KwaZulu-Natal has been formed, according to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), to look into the killings of members of the Abahlali baseMjondolo Movement.

This came about as a result of the commission writing to President Cyril Ramaphosa to request the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster’s action over the alleged human rights breaches that the movement and its members had to endure.

Base of AbahlaliThe socialist Mjondolo movement is made up of shack dwellers who fight mainly for homes, land, and an end to xenophobia.

Philile Ntuli, Commissioner of the SAHRC, states that the organization has been getting complaints for many years.

“Mjondolo base Abahlali members are being assassinated at an extremely high rate. In the last 14 years, there have been 24 member assassinations; no inquiries have been conducted. As the Human Rights Commission, we have received complaints throughout the years from people and organizations both domestically and abroad that are concerned about the situation facing Abahlali baseMjondolo.
