A Growth in Crime Violent in South Africa

South Africa had an increase in violent crime by the end of 2023, with numerous police stations reporting a high number of homicides.

Police Minister Bheki Cele reportedly told BusinessTech that there were 2.1% more murders during the third quarter of 2023–2024 (October–December 2023) than there were during the same period in 2022–2023. This translates to 155 more murders during that period.

Cele claimed that the main reasons behind the killings were disagreements, miscommunications, and road rage.

According to BusinessTech, 431 homicides were connected to mob justice and vigilantism attacks; Gauteng had the largest number of these at 84, followed by the Eastern Cape at 80 and KwaZulu-Natal at 78.

The SAPS issued statistics showing that carjackings nationwide climbed by 6.5%, from 5,608 to 5,973.

Murder and hijacking cases increased by 8.9% in the Western Cape and 3.8% in Gauteng, the richest province in the nation.
