The name change for the KwaZulu-Natal town of Ladysmith has been authorized by the government. uMnambithi will be its new name.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, the name change was announced in the Government Gazette.

The Alfred Duma Municipality’s citizens were asked to vote on the suggested name change or submit suggestions for new names in late November.

The town was named for the Spanish wife of British general Sir Harry Smith, Juana María de las Dolores de León Smith, often known as “Lady Smith.”

According to Mayor Zama Sibisi, the name was accepted, and it’s great that a democratic process was followed.

“A few residents of our municipality submitted the application. The municipality did not object to that either. Our people voted to rename their town from Ladysmith to uMnambithi, thus we are happy that the change has been authorized.”
