South Africa welcomes UNSC resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza

The resolution passed by the UN Security Council calling for an urgent truce in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan has been welcomed by South Africa.
After the conflict lasted for more than five months, the UN Security Council demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Monday.

The truce must result in a “lasting, sustainable ceasefire,” according to the UNSC resolution.

The resolution also calls for the release of captives taken during the October 7 attack, which claimed thousands of lives, from Hamas and other extremist groups.

According to Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, adherence to the Security Council is imperative for all concerned parties.

“South Africa expresses satisfaction that the Security Council has finally called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire during the month of Ramadan. The Resolution also suggests that this ceasefire should culminate in a long-term, sustainable ceasefire,” Pandor stated.

“It is now the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to ensure that there is compliance with the resolution, which is binding on the parties” she stated.

The UN Security Council’s resolution received 14 votes in favor; the US, however, abstained.
