The English novelist Sophie Kinsella, whose best-selling “Shopaholic” book series inspired a beloved American romantic comedy, said on Wednesday that she has been undergoing treatment for an uncommon and severe type of brain cancer for more than a year.

In a social media post, Kinsella—real name: Madeleine Wickham—provided an update on her health, detailing her treatment plan and providing an explanation for her previous decision to deal with the condition in private. According to the author, she received a glioblastoma diagnosis near the end of 2022. Glioblastoma is a malignant brain tumor that usually has a terrible prognosis because it develops swiftly. However, Kinsella reported to her fans that she is “feeling generally very well” and that her situation is stable at the moment. She gave appreciation to the medical staff at University College Hospital in London for managing her care.

“I did not share this before because I wanted to make sure that my children were able to hear and process the news in privacy and adapt to our ‘new normal,'” Kinsella wrote in her essay. Kinsella is a mother of five kids.

Kinsella claimed that since obtaining her diagnosis, she has had a successful surgery, been through radiation treatment, and is currently doing chemotherapy. According to the Mayo Clinic, the primary course of treatment for glioblastomas is typically surgery to remove as much of the tumor as feasible. At least one longer-term cancer medication is then given after surgery.

Kinsella thanked her medical staff and readers on Wednesday. She said that the reactions to her book “The Burnout,” which was released in October 2023, “buoyed [her] up, during a difficult time.”

“I am incredibly appreciative of the amazing doctors and nurses who have treated me, as well as my family and close friends who have been an amazing source of support. She said, “I also want to express my gratitude to my readers for their unwavering support. “My love and best wishes go out to everyone who is battling cancer, no matter how it manifests itself, as well as to those who provide support.” Having a difficult diagnosis may be very isolating and frightening, and the care and support of those around you is invaluable.”

The “Shopaholic” book series, which follows a financial journalist as she battles an obsession with shopping and struggles to manage her own money, is Kinsella’s most well-known work. The novels themselves became well-known all over the world, and she garnered a particularly significant following after the first two books in the book series were made into the 2009 romantic comedy “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” starring Hugh Grant and Isla Fisher.
