Three Inexperienced Players Who Might Surprise the Springboks in 2024

Rassie Erasmus, the coach of the Springboks, has declared that he will bravely support new potential. These three rookies have the potential to have an exceptional year.

With the first alignment camp of the year, the Springboks have started their journey to 2027, and coach Rassie Erasmus has already implemented a number of adjustments.

A wide range of “newcomers” were included in the first camp of the year, indicating that Erasmus will be widening his selection net. The coaching and management group has also undergone restructuring.

Some players, like Sanele Nohamba, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Suleiman Hartzenberg, have participated in alignment camps or SA “A” setups in the past; others, like Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Quan Horn, Neethling Fouche, and Marnus van der Merwe, will be experiencing Springbok rugby for the first time.

During a press conference in Cape Town, Erasmus was questioned about if the Springboks will want to increase their winning % in between World Cups.

Quite an interesting response from Erasmus was, “I’m not sure to be honest with you.” “We have to attempt things in order to build a team, trial players, give them opportunities, ensure that our squad depth always improves, adapt our operations, and stay current.

“I would rather be at 80% than to win the World Cup.” It’s preferable to finishing between 80 and 85% and not winning the World Cup at all. Although we would really like to increase that victory %, we must be bold and take risks when working with young players.

What Rookies are Available to Light the Scene for the Springboks?

Hartzenberg Suleiman

Hartzenberg undoubtedly seems to be a player blessed with all the necessary components to be a future Springbok star when it comes to “next-gen” skills. At barely 20 years old, he has a strong physical frame and is versatile enough to play both center and wing.

There’s no doubt that the gifted young player has the potential to be a future Canan Moodie, and he should undoubtedly be included in Test rugby this year.

Quan Horn

Because of his “warrior spirit,” the 22-year-old Lions star is exactly the kind of player Erasmus will find appealing, especially in defense. In addition to being a fierce tackler, Horn possesses several offensive soft talents that could make him the ideal replacement for Jesse Kirel and Lukhanyo Am at outside center.

Hanekom Cameron

Hanekom, one of the season’s best discoveries in South Africa, will surely have attracted the attention of the Springbok coaches when it comes to shaping future talent.

Erasmus, a former loose forward, will be drawn to Hanekom’s explosive power, movement, and work ethic. It would be exciting to watch the 21-year-old let loose on the global scene this year.
