UJ Explains the Reason Behind the Honorary Doctorate Awarded to Pitso Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane, a renowned football manager from South Africa, has amassed a stellar resume over the past 20 years and is now considered one of the game’s most respected managers. Following stints with SuperSport United and the South African national team, Mosimane’s tenure as manager of Mamelodi Sundowns further cemented his reputation.

That opened up a chance for him to work with the Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, where he was extremely successful. He has since carried on his international endeavors with Al-Ahli, Al Wahda, and Abha FC. In addition to winning the Coach of the Year Award from the South African Football Association, he also received five PSL Coach of the Season Awards and the CAF Coach of the Year Award in 2016.

The University of Johannesburg has officially announced that Mosimane has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy.

“Such accomplishments demonstrate his exceptional leadership, strategic acumen, and ability to motivate and inspire a team to perform at the highest level,” the institute said in material sent to TheSouthAfrican.com. Speaking out about the potential and caliber of African football, Mr. Mosimane has continuously pushed for equal opportunities and respect for African players in international football.

“His candidacy has contributed to raising awareness of the talent pool in Africa and the need for more funding and development of the football infrastructure on the continent.” With the establishment of the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools, he has demonstrated his continued success in this field. Due to Mosimane’s success, obstacles have been dismantled and preconceptions have been dispelled, proving that African players and coaches are capable of competing at the greatest levels in the sport.

Mosimane’s honorary doctorate ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, July 25th at 16:30.

The Registrar of UJ, Professor Bettine van Vuuren, emphasized that there are other indicators of educational performance outside graduation rate.

Instead, she stated, “it is rooted in the caliber of intelligence and character they offer to the larger community.”

Professor van Vuuren continued, “An Honorary Doctorate serves as recognition for individuals who have made substantial contributions to a particular field or have offered exceptional service to society, closely aligning with the University’s vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives.” This further emphasizes the significance of Honorary Degrees.
