Was It Too Soon for Gordinho to Return to South Africa? A CT City Defender Makes a Statement

Lorenzo-Gordinho

Defensor Lorenzo Gordinho of Cape Town City FC has discussed if he jumped the gun by coming back to the DStv Premiership following his time in Europe.

Gordinho added his name to the increasing number of South African football players looking for opportunities overseas, hoping to test his abilities in a more competitive setting.

Gordinho’s trip to Denmark turned out to be shorter than anticipated. He transferred to HB Koge after joining Viborg FF in the 2021–2022 season. The former Kaizer Chiefs defender did, however, only spend a year and a half in Denmark overall before returning to the DStv Premiership.

In the midst of the 2022–2023 PSL season, the gifted center-back joined the Citizens in January 2023. Thanks to his expertise, he soon established himself as a vital member of the team. He has appeared in 31 league games thus far.

Gordinho Regarding His Early Leaving of the European Scene

The 29-year-old claims that since football is a game of opportunities, it wasn’t too early to leave Europe. The opportunity presented itself in CT City, and he made a choice.

“You cannot live on ‘what if’ as a football player,” Gordinho stated to FARPost. Based on what you currently see in front of you, you must make a decision.

“You might pass up an opportunity today, but it could disappear in an instant. I felt that joining with Cape Town City FC was the best choice at the moment.

“That’s the option I went with; I wasn’t sure what would happen next with my football in Europe, so I couldn’t wait to see ‘what if’.”

“I was having fun and it was a positive experience for me to be in Europe. I believe that the style of play made a difference, but now that I’m back home, I believe our league’s standard has increased.
